The moose (Alces alces) is a species of elk and is the largest member of the deer family. Its scientific name means moose and elk. The name moose comes from the Algonquin word mooswa, which means “twig-eater".
Most moose can grow up to 6'5. They have long legs which makes them look slow and lazy. Its muzzle is long and fleshy which slightly curves around its nostrils. Both males and females have a sac, also known as the bell, hanging from their necks. Males also grow large and heavy antlers that separately grow from the middle on their heads which, later down the line, forks out in different directions. These antlers are used for fighting for mates and shed them off after mating session in order to save their strength for winter. They then grow it back during spring in three months making them the fastest growing organ in the world.
Moose in popular culture[edit]
In most cultures, a moose is depicted as being nice, good natured but not bright. Bullwinkle of The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends is the most famous moose. Other well-liked moose characters include Rutt and Tuke from the Disney movie Brother Bear.
