Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is a 2002 American animated adventure film. Directed by Kelly Asbury and Lorna Cook in their directorial debuts, Spirit is the seventh overall film produced by DreamWorks Animation.
In contrast to the way animals are portrayed using anthropomorphics in other animated features, Spirit and his fellow horses communicate with each other through sounds and body language like real horses. Spirit's thoughts are narrated by his voice actor Matt Damon, but otherwise, he has no vocal dialogue.
Plot[edit]
Spirit takes place in the 19th-century American West. Born to a herd of Kiger Mustangs, Spirit goes on to become the leader of the herd whose duty is to keep it safe. Although Spirit is a courageous leader, he also posesses great curiosity. One night, upon spotting a strange light near his herd, the stallion decides to investigate the location, where he finds restrained, docile horses and their human wranglers sleeping around a campfire. They wake up, and seeing him as a magnificent specimen, chase and capture him, taking him to a US cavalry post. It is there, his adventure to escape begins.
Television series[edit]
In 2017, a computer-animated spin-off television series based on the film, titled Spirit Riding Free, premiered on Netflix. The series follows all the daring adventures when Spirit, who is the offspring of the original, meets a girl named Lucky whose courage matches his own and goes on adventures with her. Lucky also has friends, Pru, who owns a talented and proud palomino horse called Chica Linda, and Abigail, who owns a friendly and goofy pinto horse called Boomerang.
