Badger is the common name for any animal of three subfamilies, which belong to the family Mustelidae, the same mammal family as ferrets, weasels, otters, and other types of related carnivores. The name is possibly derived from the word badge, on account of the marks on the head. There are 15 species of badger, in four subfamilies: Melinae, (the Eurasian badgers) Helictidinae, (ferret-badgers) Mellivorinae, (the Ratel or honey badger), and Taxidiinae (the American badger).
The collective name for a group of badgers is a "cete".
A Badger is also a common name for a member of constaff who checks conbadges at the doors of con events and art shows.
