Hi there, MKerris - welcome to WikiFur, and thanks for your contribution to Norwegian Paws! Let me know on my user talk page if you need any help not already provided. :-) --GreenReaper(talk) 03:11, 14 Oct 2005 (UTC)

A newbie question...[edit]

I just added a few country-specific categories to the Regional category page to make the finding of articles useful to one's country's furry community easier, as this gathers them all at one place. However, I'm not sure how well these fit under the Regional category - would it probably be better to make a new category, named Countries or perhaps National (to make it in the same 'league' as Regional)? I just thought I should ask for your views on this =) MKerris 01:37, 15 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Good question. I think ideally the things currently in Regional should be in their respective countries, and those countries should be in a category of their own - perhaps Category:Groups by location or Category:Groups by country or something similar? --GreenReaper(talk) 03:40, 15 Oct 2005 (UTC)

On blanking articles[edit]

Hi there! I just wanted to mention that while your instincts were right on removing the redirect that was on Lori'anne Slutchylde, something that is even worse than a redirect to nowhere is a blank article; the red link serves as an invitation for information to be added :-) Other than that, it looks like you've done a great job adding and editing. Keep up the good work! --Duncan da Husky 14:09, 18 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, I shall keep that in mind for similar cases in the future ;) --MKerris 14:19, 18 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Correction to the Baked Fur article[edit]

Hey, MKerris. I believe you put a comment in the Baked Furs article that was intended for the discussion page. I moved it there. Cheers, --Tom Howling 19:15, 19 Oct 2005 (UTC)

I think that comment was actually written by Aerowolf, as I only did some small sentence restructuring to the page - just thought I should point it out, important or not. I do agree in that it fits much better on the discussion page, however. :) --MKerris 21:25, 19 Oct 2005 (UTC)
My intent was to make information more generally available. I don't tend to integrate information in very well, so I was rather hoping that someone would integrate it into the main article. --Aerowolf 06:59, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Not a big deal, but...[edit]

How come Wikifur still have 'Wikipedia' in all its page titles? Many other wikis here at Wikicities have its own name up there - perhaps Wikifur should too? ;) --MKerris 17:16, 10 Nov 2005 (UTC)

I'm really not sure what you're talking about - could you clarify? Here it says "WikiFur" in page titles (along the caption of the window), not Wikipedia. --GreenReaper(talk) 02:35, 11 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Noticed the many changes . . . I'm not sure what the current wiki support for Norwegian is, but if there is already an entry for the language item you do not have to remake it - the entries in the MediaWiki namespace are overrides for the existing translation, not "it's there or nothing's there".

Ignore this if you really are seeing everything that you're changing in English right now and it's changing to Norwegian after you've written stuff. :-) --GreenReaper(talk) 03:42, 13 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Ah, yes, or if there's a better term. :-) --GreenReaper(talk) 03:49, 13 Nov 2005 (UTC)
Sadly, ignorance is not one of my most prominent virtues, so I'll just tell you that it was probably close to 50/50 English/Norwegian when I first started (used to be somewhat confusing at times) - and yes, I'm only editing the currently English entries (or improving on the already existing Norwegian ones). :) --MKerris 03:58, 13 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Welcome to WikiFur:Administrators![edit]

Help on your new abilities is available on the linked page, if you need it. Here's hoping you don't need to use them too much. :-) --GreenReaper(talk) 20:10, 12 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Criteria for protecting/excluding a personal page[edit]

Is the text found in this article enough to make conclusions as for the action of protecting and excluding? Or would the person need to contact an admin by e-mail or IM? Just wondering, as I'm kinda new to situations like this. :) --MKerris 19:18, 25 Nov 2005 (UTC)

I'm just going to delete that for now. It looks like someone out to cause trouble. --GreenReaper(talk) 19:33, 25 Nov 2005 (UTC)

WTF?[edit]

The hell are you doing? --Skunk

I am translating the system messages that belongs to the Swedish language setting from English to Swedish, which tends to create an overflow of entries in the 'Recent changes' list. There isn't much to do about it, other than toggle the 'show minor edits' flag, I'm afraid. --MKerris 23:29, 28 Nov 2005 (UTC)
Actually, you might be able to fix it by adding &bot=1 to the end of the URL for the page you're getting the links from. That should then add &bot=1 to the edit links, and that should hide the edits from recent changes (unless people turn on bot edits). --GreenReaper(talk) 02:59, 29 Nov 2005 (UTC)
Hey thanks - I wasn't aware that such a feature even existed... I'll give it a try the next time I feel like going on a translation spree then :) --MKerris 09:53, 29 Nov 2005 (UTC)
I show bots - just in case someone uses them for malicious edits. -- Siege 09:58, 29 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Total newb[edit]

I sure hope I stuck this reply in the right place...

I'm starting to get a hang of the editing system, now that I'm comfortable, I'm thinking of starting a small project.

Don't ask me what brought this on, but I'm going to try to log most of the cool info that was on the radio show 2 Sense on the page-to-be 2 Sense Index.

Please get back to me with any thoughts you have on this. =:)

--Indref 04:01, 5 Jan 2006 (UTC)

By all means, feel free to start a new article! The rest of us will pitch in with any changes, correctiosn, etc. --Dmuth 04:48, 5 Jan 2006 (UTC)
Looks like it is coming up rather nicely already - all the basics seem to be covered at least, so adding new entries to the page shouldn't prove much of a problem. Of course; should you feel that you could need some assistance sometime, don't hesitate to contact an admin - although they might not always give you a lightning fast response (as in my case here), they will more than likely help you out when able to.
Good luck with your future endeavors here at WikiFur. :) --MKerris 13:10, 5 Jan 2006 (UTC)
Sweet! Feeling good about this already. Just two things that I'm concerned about. There's probably somewhere I can look this up, but I might as well ask you. First, we all know what 2's mouth [beak?] is like, and a little coarse langauge and adult themes may end up on this article. What's your advice on this. Second, I'm thinking this article could get big. Very big. I also need some advice on that.
Otherwise, thank you for the usual homely welcome I get from every furry group =:D --Indref 20:08, 5 Jan 2006 (UTC)
I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying yourself. :)
Regarding your first question; to mark a page for explicit content, you could use one of these images - the following example code would show one of the MA rating ones on the right-hand side of the page:
It should obviously be put someplace before where the actual mature content begins. Edit: I just recalled that such a warning actually isn't a binding policy, as WikiFur isn't censored for the protection of minors. You are encouraged to read this section on the matter, and make up your own mind about it. ;)
As for if (or rather when?) the article gets too long, we could easily just split it into two separate pages (or find some other way to solve the issue). It's nothing you should have to worry about now, anyways - we'll think up a solution when the time comes. --MKerris 22:01, 5 Jan 2006 (UTC)

constructive criticism regarding a link change...[edit]

Hi. I'd like to point out that you might want to refrain from changing external links in-text to WikiFur definitions and moving the link to the External links section. I have a specific example in mind; the way the sentence was structured clearly indicated to the user that when they clicked the link, they would be taken to the external page that was described. After your change, they were taken to a definition of the concept. I'm not 100% certain of wikipedian style, but as a web designer, I think the change was extremely counter-intuitive and confusing. If I click an AOL.com link, expecting to go to AOL.com, I wouldn't want to go see the definition of a website or ISP.

I'm pointing this out not to be an ass, but because I feel similar changes elsewhere would be detrimental to your edits. Leam 22:40, 13 Jan 2006 (UTC)

Hmm... looking at the Help:Furry_Book_of_Style, it states toward the bottom of the page that links to offsite documents should be at the bottom of the page in a seperate section.
From a UI standpoint, however, I agree that changing the link to the forums is a little non-intuitive. I'm not sure what the best way to keep that from happening is. Maybe it'd be best to not link that particular term to prevent any confusion at all. Or maybe restructure the sentence instead, I dunno. Maybe some other folks can share some ideas for eliminating such confusion in that and other articles. --Dmuth 22:48, 13 Jan 2006 (UTC)
In retrospect, Leam, I do agree that my change (and any similar such I might have done) was a little for the worse - and I clearly take your point. My mind is usually fixed in the 'Wikify-above-all-else' position when doing minor edits like that, which is not always the most appropriate setting for all cases, obviously. ;)
Now, here's something I've seen done many times before, to include both an internal and external link in one go: forum [1]
Would this perhaps work out the issue to some degree? --MKerris 00:16, 14 Jan 2006 (UTC)
Format is good, but if it gets in the way of the user's expectations and usage, it's less good, just as it is not strictly necessary to link every word to the WikiFur article about it (I know I have a habit of doing this as well, and it is usually a good idea to do so - just not always). --GreenReaper(talk) 06:47, 15 Jan 2006 (UTC)
I'll kind that in mind, then. Not to say that I can be fully sure that it will not happen again from time to time, but I'll try my best. :) --MKerris 15:03, 15 Jan 2006 (UTC)
You would not believe how many times I've made entire sentences of single-letter or word links. =^_^= Leam 20:39, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
I'm still in the process of restructuring that paragraph, but my experience in UI has always told me to go for the most clear answer because people generally have an increasingly short attention span. Still, the Help:Furry_Book_of_Style doesn't say that all external links must be put into the bottom section.
I think the winning formula is to try and be sparse with apropos external links within the article, and keep the major ones at the bottom. Leam 20:39, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Single-digit dates[edit]

I rolled back your edits to WikiFur:Comic of the Week and WikiFur:Featured articles and moved the articles concerned back, because the way the week number variable works is that it is given by MediaWiki as 1, rather than 01, and people are likely to get highly confused if they try to make (say) an article for Week 03 and it doesn't show up. :-) --GreenReaper(talk) 06:47, 15 Jan 2006 (UTC)

Well, I wasn't sure if the change was to be permanent or not, but the week numbers were automatically set to double-digits some days ago - the 'CURRENTWEEK' template makes this quite evident, as can be seen here: 44
I do agree that the extra digit is superfluous, though... maybe it's caused by the same changes that made the pageviews disappear? We should perhaps wait until the 1.5 upgrade has been performed (hopefully successfully this time) to see if it gets fixed or not. --MKerris 15:03, 15 Jan 2006 (UTC)
Interesting. I'll ask about that. Perhaps the server did change, and the date along with it. --GreenReaper(talk) 19:43, 15 Jan 2006 (UTC)
This is fixed now. -- Tim Starling 05:39, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
Great! :-) --GreenReaper(talk) 06:19, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
