Anthrocon guests of honor

Anthrocon 2011 was the 15th annual Anthrocon furry convention. It was held on the weekend of June 23 to 26, 2011,[1] at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

It was on this year that Anthrocon tied with ConFurence for longevity.

The convention's theme was "The Anthropomorphic Institute of Magic". Guests of honor were Andy Runton and Peter S. Beagle.[2][3]

There was a total 4,400 attendees from 39 countries, and 854 fursuiters in the fursuit parade.[4]

The ToonSeum was Anthrocon's charity benefactor this year,[5] receiving $11,522 from a charity auction, donations, and an Uncle Kage/2, The Ranting Gryphon show.[6]

Hotel space[edit]

The number of furs attending Anthrocon this year caused problems, with some reports that attendees had booked out all the available hotel rooms in downtown Pittsburgh over that weekend.[7][8] Anthrocon Chairman Uncle Kage stated that this might explain the slower growth this year, compared to 2009/10 - "When Downtown hotels became fully booked in mid-May, Anthrocon registration dropped off dramatically", he said. He went on to say that he doubted the event would grow further unless more rooms were made available near the center.[7]

In the same article, it also stated that Anthrocon is worth an estimated $5 million a year to Pittsburgh.[7]

Financials[edit]

Anthrocon, Inc. started the year with $109428.96 in assets, including $55365.96 in cash (and temporary cash investments). They ended the year with $91346.04 in assets, including $42607.24 in cash. Liabilities were zero, making their gain/loss for the year $-18082.92 ($-12758.72 in cash), and their net balance $91346.04.

Their total revenue was $392805.02, of which $219970 was from memberships, $32864.48 was from donations, $890 was from advertising and $4963.63 was from merchandise, after accounting for the cost of goods sold.

Their expenses came to $405563.74, of which $49376.60 was for occupancy, $39271.11 for equipment rental and maintenance, $38795.26 for catering, $47388.76 for labor and $28619.94 for printing.

Note: These financials provide just a brief overview, and should be considered in context. Each convention has its own situation, which may change from year to year. Special events (like art shows) that are part of a charity's mission are usually run at a loss. Conventions typically have many other expenses which may come to far more than those listed. Check the source for further details.

The figures above include $123,526.67 of revenue from consignment sales in the art show and artists alley, of which $106,962.22 was paid out to artists.
